On May 15, representatives from the Center for Global Civic and Political Strategies (CGCPS) attended the event “Environmental Crimes and Illicit Finance” hosted at the Open Government Hub. The discussion centered on the intersection of environmental destruction and financial secrecy, with a particular focus on how illicit financial flows fuel environmental degradation across the globe.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of FACT Coalition’s investigative work, including the report “Dirty Money and the Destruction of the Amazon.” The report underscores how U.S. financial secrecy facilitates environmental crimes by enabling actors involved in illegal deforestation and unregulated mining to launder profits with minimal accountability.
The event emphasized the urgent need for greater financial transparency and stronger enforcement mechanisms to disrupt the financial incentives behind environmental exploitation. CGCPS joined a diverse group of civil society organizations, policy advocates, and transparency experts in discussing policy solutions and collaborative strategies to curb environmental crimes enabled by opaque financial systems.
Our participation reflects CGCPS’s ongoing commitment to advancing transparent, accountable governance systems that safeguard both human and environmental well-being.
